Staff v Students - Annual Football Match

After all the hype, it was time to get down to business. Forget Brazil 2014, forget Froch v Groves, we all know what the big time really is LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE !!

As usual, the game got off to a cagey start, with nerves having better control of the ball than any player on show. But it was the staff that created the first clear chances through incisive passing from Jones and Mattinson. After the early pressure, Year 11’s settled into the game, gaining parity in possession and O’Brien pulling the strings, Abdul was starting to get into the game. Evans and Clempson had to step up and stop the Year 11 attacks, and after a tough ten minutes, Evans showed composure in defence; beating one and releasing the fleet-footed Wilkinson away down the left. He beat the first defender, and cut inside, to hit a thirty yard defence-splitting ball to the on-rushing Mattinson, who beat the keeper, slotting home from 6 yards, 1:0!

The staff maintained a hold up to the half time whistle, with Clempson, Evans to the fore, and the rampaging Sinclair and Jones impersonating modern day wingbacks. Staff consolidated their lead with a sharp break from Armitage just 5 minutes before half time. Turning the defence inside out, he was brought down by a desperate challenge; PENALTY! Armitage took the penalty himself, sending the keeper the wrong way, 2-0!!

A series of substitutions at half time brought a slow start to the second half, with the Y11’s getting on top after the messy early exchanges. A series of better possession and pressure, reaped a reward for the students after Ibrahim struck a lovely goal, giving Butterworth no chance, with a quality right foot strike into the top corner, 2-1!!

The staff had to step up their game, and a series of further changes brought more stability. An inspired Jones decided to throw himself up front, after the mobile Armitage succumbed to cramp with 10 minutes to go.

Never let it be said Jones’ has ‘two left feet’, but with just five minutes to go, he found a use for one of them! A long clearance from Lovatt saw Jones turn and outpace (yes outpace) a tired back four. He drew the keeper on to him and hammered the ball home from a tight angle, wheeling away in triumph (his first goal since 1986), 3-1, and a very tight game finally over.

Fantastic attitude, effort and sportsmanship shown by all in the game; the Y11’s were a credit to themselves and Hinde House in a closely fought game.
