Careers and Work Experience

Hinde House Secondary School offers all students access to free and impartial careers education and guidance and opportunities to gain an understanding of the world of work.

Careers Education covers aspects such as:

  1. Personal and social skills.
  2. Economic well-being.
  3. Citizenship.
  4. Rights and responsibilities.
  5. Transferable employability skills.
  6. Work Experience.

We pride ourselves on offering a strong integrated offer of support to students which incorporates work in Period 1 (registration+) and a separately timetabled PSHE curriculum, in years 7-9. Year 10 is mainly focused upon detailed, structured preparation for work experience which occurs for two weeks at the end of the summer term.

Students are encouraged to arrange a ‘self-placement’ or undertake a placement through the Local Authority ‘Opportunity Sheffield’ organisation. As a result students' work experience opportunities are extremely varied and include all types of career settings.

Each student is supported whilst on work placement, with visits from a teacher, on the job support, a daily diary, and a detailed de-brief at school following completion.

A dedicated Careers Advisor from Sheffield Futures works closely with senior staff responsible for Careers Education and post-16 progression into further education, training or employment.

Students and parents/carers are given a range of opportunities to attend relevant Post-16 evenings, visits and interviews so they are ready to make the next important step when they leave school. In 2016-17 over 30 providers attended the Post-16 Open Evening event to provide support and guidance to students and parents/carers.
